Stock Show Life Inspires Local Author

"My life has always revolved around my husband and my children. My dream was to be a wife and a mom. I didn't have aspirations to be anything other than that," said Seminole resident Pam Ratliff. However, with the release of her first children's book, "The Three Little Show Pigs," Pam has expanded her title to wife, mom, and author.

A landowner called Texas Game Wardens when a group of quail hunters requested assistance rescuing a dog that had fallen into an abandoned grain silo-turned well. The dog, Maria, had chased a wounded bird through thick brush when she disappeared from her owner’s sight.

It’s so easy to get in a routine and forget that faith still pleases God. For example, I recently woke up early to write my blog but accidentally dozed back off for 45 minutes. Although the extra rest was nice, the problem was my schedule wasn’t going to be very lenient and I lost some valuable time. But in my older years, I’ve learned it’s never good to rush. So with coffee in hand and my computer across the room, I prayed.

J.A. “Andy” Lammons, 97, formerly of Seminole went to be with the Lord on June 27, 2022, in Vancleave, Mississippi. He was born May 25, 1925, in Yazoo County, Mississippi to Charley Dalton “Doyle” Lammons and Carrie Lee Kinard Lammons. Andy enlisted on November 6, 1942, in the US Army at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Andy served on board the United States’ Ship Rocky Mount, Flagship of Commander Amphibious group six, U.S. Pacific fleet during bombardment and assault landings against Japanese held Leyte and Philippine Islands. For his heroic efforts, Andy was awarded nine battle stars before being discharged October 9, 1945, as C.P. Callan in California and ranked as a Technician 4th Grade. Andy married his first love, Ellouise Lammons on November 15, 1946. In 1953, Andy moved to West Texas where he worked for Enron Oil Company for over 20 years as an oilfield pumper. Andy began serving on the Seminole Volunteer Fire Department in 1963 and continued to be a vital member of the department for 51 years. Andy was appointed Fire Marshal on November 2, 1984 and retired from the fire department in 2014. He was a Boy Scout troop leader and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. After the passing of Ellouise in 1993, Andy married Lela Faye, in Shreveport, Louisiana, on June 15, 1995. Andy was affectionately called Daddy, Dan- Dan, and Uncle Bud by those who loved him. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Jacob Janzen Wiebe 67, of Seminole will be held Sunday, July 3, 2022 in the Sommerfeld Church at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Isaac Fehr officiating, under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home.

Thinking Out Loud: The Tangled Search for North

After spending hours writing this week’s column, it occurred to me that it might be more appropriate to set that project aside and start over with something more in keeping with a national celebration of our independence, such as it is. Certainly, those who revere our Constitution as written have a few reasons to be thankful that some level of sanity appears to have prevailed on the High Court this session, even when it’s lost in the streets.

There are some things that money can’t buy, like the feeling one receives helping others or feeding starving children around the world who can’t help themselves. I didn’t know what to expect Friday night (June 24) when a friend, her seven-year-old son, and I signed up to assist with the “Feed My Starving Children” program at the Seminole Community Center.
