U.S. Senate Passes Farm Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate on Thursday passed a bill that makes modest modifications to existing farm programs while largely avoiding changes to food stamps, setting up a showdown with the House.
The bill passed 86-11.

The legislation renews farm programs such as crop insurance and land conservation. Farm programs are set to expire Sept. 30 unless Congress acts.

Work on the legislation comes at a time when farmers are facing low prices and a potential trade war that could depress commodities prices further.

June 25 -- Seminole Police Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of FM 1788 in reference to a theft. The complainant stated that an employee had taken lottery tickets without paying for them. A report was filed for theft and the investigation is ongoing.

June 25 -- Seminole Police Officers were dispatched to the Seminole Beer Barn on South Main in reference to a wallet that was stolen the night before. Information was gathered and a report was taken and an investigation is underway.

City Leaders Explain Purpose of Seeking Sales Tax Increase

Come one, come all.

Administration officials with the City of Seminole and members of the Seminole City Council are planning to host a Monday, July 9 public comment period  related to the Council's recent announcement of their planned pursuit of implementing a half-percent sales tax increase, with proceeds from the increase devoted strictly to fund the maintenance and repairs of some 50 miles of City of Seminole-maintained roadways.

The slow-soaking, overnight rains experienced Father's Day weekend in the West Texas region was a warmly welcomed event.

An event which seems to be a far gone in the memory for most, as a high pressure system again settled into the West Texas region and has dominated the area's weather pattern. Bringing with it the hot, dry conditions which have been experienced over the past week and appears will continue to hold a firm grasp over the region for the short term.

Gaines Leaders Approve of $37K in Repair Work to Seminole Museum, Library Facility

Roughly 1,000 liner feet of facia and soffit repairs will soon be addressed at the Gaines County Library and Museum facility in Seminole, following action taken by the Gaines County Commissioners Court on Wednesday.
Seminole-based construction firm First Choice Construction was awarded a bid quoted at $36,700 for the associated work at the facility, located in the 700 block of Hobbs Hwy. Gaines County leaders, in Wednesday's meeting, anticipate work for the project to begin in the not-too-distant future.

Texas to Propose New Plan to Protect Threatened Lizard

Texas hopes to unveil a new strategy to protect the threatened dunes sagebrush lizard by the end of next month. And the endangered species expert managing the remake for the state says the new approach will not only work but stand the test of time — unlike its predecessor.

“It will be a lot better,” said Robert Gulley, the director of economic growth and endangered species management at the state comptroller’s office, which oversees species protection.

“Restless Natives”, a program presented by the Science Spectrum Center of Lubbock, introduced approximately 200 Seminole, Seagraves, and Loop residents to a variety of animals commonly found in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.

Hosted by the Gaines County Library and sponsored by the Seminole Lion’s Club, the event was held this past Wednesday at the Gaines County Park Community Building.

Local Man Seriously Injured at Alan Henry

It appears that no matter how old or successful a mother’s son becomes, he is still her little boy. When he is happy, she beams. When he hurts, however, no matter how strong that woman may appear, she hurts twice as much. Just ask Seminole resident Cathy Kelly.

One of Kelly’s two sons, Adam, 29, was involved in a boating accident last Saturday evening at Lake Alan Henry that almost ended up being a mother’s worst nightmare.
