SPPHD Reports Two Additional COVID Deaths

According to the South Plains Public Health District, two additional COVID-related deaths have been confirmed in Gaines County bringing the total to 19 fatalities since mid-March. The Texas Department of Health and Human Service COVID-19 dashboard, however, reports a total of 26 deaths in Gaines County due to the coronavirus.

Both departments list the total confirmed cases in Gaines County as 1,234. Of those cases, the SPPHD reports 84 as active and 1,131 recovered. The only descrepency is in the number of fatalities.

Zach Holbrooks, Executive Director of SPPHD explained why the number of deaths reported by the two health departments differ. “We want to be absolutely sure, to the best of our ability, that we are correct on our numbers. We wait until we receive official death notifications before we add them to the health district update.” Holbrooks said.
