Dear Editor,

I just wanted to send a note of thanks for the story you recently ran about inspirational role models and specifically Coach Jackie Horton.

This story was refreshing on so many levels. First of all, it is great to have a positive role model and story be the headline instead of some of the more negative things that have had to unfortunately be the lead of late. Troubles at the hospital, recent murder trials and those about the injury to a child have highlighted some of the ugliness that we unfortunately live with in today’s society.

However, this community and more importantly, our school employees, are doing so many positive things. As a member of the SISD school board I have had the good fortune to witness so much of the goodness and great impacts that our teachers are having on the children of our community.

I was fortunate enough to have a daughter play for Coach Horton during her high school career, and it was truly a blessing to be a part of her team. I appreciate the influence she had on my child and the respectful, committed and classy way she conducted her program. She strived every day to treat the kids with dignity and fairness while reminding them that life was about much more than sports.

Many of our teachers and coaches are doing great things each and every day at the Seminole schools. And during this time of Thanksgiving, that is one thing for which I am truly grateful. Our employees at the school, whether teachers, aides, cafeteria workers, housekeeping, maintenance or bus drivers, they are each working hard to provide a positive environment for our students to thrive.

So, if you see one of our school employees please tell them how much you appreciate what they are doing for our kids each day. I truly believe that education is a tougher business today than it has ever been and sometimes the rewards don’t outweigh the difficulties. But, I do pray each and every day for all our staff at the schools and know that He is blessing their work and knows how much they care.

Marilou, keep up the good work, your stories have added so much to the Sentinel staff and with Leo retiring you will really have to step up now!

By the way, thanks Leo for the great stories you have written highlighting our community members over the years. They were fun to read.

Sincerely,

Shane Wimmer
