Joseph Frank Svacek III

Joseph Frank Svacek, III, 71, of Midland passed away in Midland Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, after a brief illness. He was born February 19, 1947 in Lubbock and grew up in Seminole. He was the son of the late Joseph F. Svacek, Jr. and Larue Barrier Svacek.

He attended the University of Texas and was drafted into to the army. He served as an instructor at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. After an honorable discharge he moved to Waco to attend Texas State Technical Institute and received a degree in Laser Electro-Optics Technology. After graduation he accepted a position with Bell Labs (now AT&T) in New Jersey. After four years at Bell Labs, he took a job with Los Alamos Labs in New Mexico. From there he was recruited by several startup companies involving fiber optics. He holds several patents from his work.

He is survived by twin daughters Anne Svacek Engelbrecht of Escondido, CA, Katherine Larue Svacek of San Diego, CA, grandchildren, Luke Daniel Engelbrecht and Ava Larue Engelbrecht, sister Jana Svacek Able, nephew Nicholas Able and niece Carrie Able.

A service will be held Saturday, November 17, at 11:00 AM at the American Heritage Funeral Home, 4100 FM 1788, Midland, Texas, immediately followed by burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
