Hyle Cox Doss

Hyle Cox Doss passed from his earthly life to his heavenly life on July 15, 2020. He was born on December 3, 1923, in Seminole to Maggie Cox and Scott Cowan Doss. He was the last of six children and was the stalwart of the entire Doss family for over a half century. He received his education in Seminole Public Schools and at Weatherford Junior College where he met the love of his life, Florence, in 1941. After serving two years in the U.S. Navy, Florence and Hyle were married on December 9, 1945.

Hyle worked at a variety of jobs in his lifetime, including in retail, banking, abstracts and insurance, but excelled when it came to his favorite – oil and gas leasing. He was known around town for his very detailed records. Hyle and his son, Skeet, worked together for over 25 years, as Doss & Doss. Hyle had a fabulous voice and was always obliging when called upon to sing. He was also known for his fantastic memory of poems that he learned in high school and could still recite the Gettysburg address. He played Santa Claus for many years for pre-schools, churches and families on Christmas morning. Hyle had many monickers, including Dad, Uncle Hyle, PaPa and “Doss”. When there were children around, he always had quarters to pull out of ears.

Hyle was a lifetime member of the Lions’ Club, was a former member of the Permian Basin Landmen’s Association and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Midland, where he served as a Deacon and Elder and was a former Moderator of the Tres Rios Presbytery. He served as chairman of the Seminole Memorial Hospital Board of Managers from 1959-1963 and also served on the Presbyterian Children’s Home board. Additionally, he served on the Board of Trustees of Seminole ISD. He was an active member of the Exchange Club of Midland. During his later years, he would visit the elderly and ill members of the church as well as many of his friends in the community

Hyle was preceded in death by his parents, wife Florence, son Daniel Hyle, and his sisters Cleo, Beth, Bernice, Bobbie and brother Scott.

He is survived by his son Skeet and wife Nancy of Midland, and Polli Doss Satterwhite of College Station. He is also survived by grandchildren Zach and wife Vickie of Midland, Dixie and husband Jason Marburger of Round Rock, Randi and husband Chris Daniel of College Station, Ross Satterwhite and Brett Satterwhite of College Station and by four great-grandchildren, Wyatt and “June-Bug” Doss and Lee and Josh Daniel, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families and countless friends.

The family would like to thank Jennifer Mauldin for her compassionate care of Hyle during the last three months of his very long life.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 19, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Midland, to celebrate this amazing man. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Seminole, P.O. Box 1077, Seminole, TX 79360 or the Presbyterian Children’s Home, P.O. Box 140888, Austin, TX 78714-9981.
