Gaines County’s active COVID cases decreasing

While news agencies across the country report a second strain of the COVID-19 virus in four states, Gaines County appears to be making progress, with only 55 positive coronavirus cases still active. Totals in the county since March are at 1,245 with 1,171 recoveries and 19 deaths, according to the Jan. 4 numbers from the South Plains Public Health District.

In a USA Today report on Monday, Dec. 4, reporter Grace Hauck stated the new variant, labeled the B.1.1.7 strain, has been identified in California, Colorado, Florida, and New York. Public health experts expect it to be identified in more states in the coming days.

Counties in the SPPHD include Gaines, Dawson, Terry, Yoakum, and Lynn counties. Dawson County currently has 144 active cases, Terry County reports 332 active, Yoakum County has 38, and 58 COVID-19 cases remain active in Lynn County.
