COVID Numbers Continue to Rise

On Nov. 1, total COVID-19 positive cases in Gaines County hovered at 597 and, according to reports from the South Plains Public Health Department, there had been nine deaths related to the coronavirus; by the end of the month, the total was 13. An additional 339 Gaines County residents were confirmed positive for COVID-19 in November.

The Texas Health and Human Services COVID-19 Dashboard reports15 deaths in Gaines County and 936 positive cases. Using the SPPHD totals (936) and the Gaines County 2020 estimated population numbers from the U.S Census Bureau (21,492), 4.35% of Gaines County has contracted COVID-19 since March.

According to, "Almost 7,000 COVID-19 patients were in Texas hospitals Thursday, Nov. 12, the most in nearly three months, as infections of the coronavirus that cause the disease continue nationwide, and worldwide. The Texas Department of State Health Services reports the 6,925 hospitalizations were the most Texas has counted since Aug. 12.
