Six cases of COVID-19, associated with the Gaines County Jail in Seminole, were confirmed by the South Plains Public Health Department (SPPHD) on June 30. On July 1, an additional two cases at the jail were confirmed, as well as two instances believed to be community exposure and contact with a known case. The recent confirmations bring the total number of positive cases recorded in Gaines County to 26.

Fourteen of those cases are completed, and 12 are ongoing. SPPHD officials will continue monitoring these open cases, as indicated by the CDC. The District’s disease surveillance team will continue working diligently to ensure Gaines County residents remain at low risk of contracting COVID-19.

The South Plains Public Health District and its healthcare partners will also continue to monitor COVID-19 in the Seminole area to prepare for more local cases. They ask the public to follow proper hygiene recommendations and social distancing practices.
