Over the past several years, automobile accidents within Gaines County have increased. Both Fire Chief D.A. Dagley and Emergency Management Director Robert Barrett blame distracted driving. One of the culprits, as expected, is the cell phone.

The undercarriage of an 18-wheeler caught fire Thursday morning across from the Gaines County Sheriff's Office. Responding to the call was the Seminole PD, Sheriff's Office, DPS and Seminole Volunteer Fire Department. Fire Chief D.A. Dagley was first on the scene. Musing by Marilou: Young Graduates Answer the Call to Duty

Thursday, June 9, was not only an exciting day for Seminole and Gaines County law enforcement but also for newly graduated peace officer Savannah Pinson. While three new police officers were sworn in by Chief Bernie Kraft and pinned by their fathers, Pinson was surprised by boyfriend Randy Knelsen, who, on bended knee, offered her a sparkling ring and a future together. Knelsen is a volunteer firefighter in Seminole and Pinson joined the Gaines County Sheriff's Office on Monday, June 13, as a deputy.

USDA Reminds Producers to File Crop Acreage Reports

WASHINGTON – Agricultural producers who have not yet completed their crop acreage reports after planting should make an appointment with their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) service center before the applicable deadline. July 15 is a major deadline for most crops, but acreage reporting deadlines vary by county and by crop. Producers should make an appointment as soon as possible to avoid missing earlier deadlines.

Three graduates of the Permian Basin Law Enforcement Academy were sworn into the Seminole Police Department by Chief Bernie Kraft following the 109th Basic Peace Officer Session at the Midland County Horseshoe Arena on June 9. Joining the police force are Edwin U. Avila, age 21 from Hobbs, NM; 25-year-old Stefany Moriel of Seminole, and Manuel Escamilla, age 24, of Phoenix, AZ. Officer Avila was pinned by his father Jose L. Avila, Officer Moriel's honors were done by her dad Antonio Moriel, and pinning Officer Escamilla was his father, Rodolfo Escamilla. Also completing the Permian Basin Law Enforcement Academy and receiving her diploma on June 9 was Savannah Pinson. Pinson was sworn in as a deputy with the Gaines County Sheriff's Office on June 13 by Sheriff Ronny Pipkin. She was pinned by her father, Wayne Pinson. (Sentinel photo)
